The city of Agra was the imperial capital of the Mughal Empire during the reign of Shah Jahan. He built the beautiful mausoleum - the Taj Mahal - for his consort Mumtaz Mahal after her death in 1631. Agra also has many other Mughal monuments - the Agra Fort, the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, and Akbar's fort at Sikandra near Agra, which make a visit to this historical place in Uttar Pradesh, India, a must see on your tour of the historical places in India.

  • Taj Mahal

    Agra is famous as being home to one of the seven wonders of the world-the Taj Mahal. The architectural splendour of the mausoleums, the fort and the palaces is a vivid remainder of the mausoleums, the fort and the palaces is a vivid reminder of the capital in the 16th and early 17th centuries.

  • Agra Fort

    Built by the great Emperor Akbar in 1565 A.D. the fort is a masterpiece of design and construction. Within the fort are a number of exquisite building, including the Moti Masjid, Diwane-I-Aam, Diwani-I-Khas and musanman Burj, where the Emperor Shah Jahan died in imprisonment beside Jahangirs place, Khaas Mahal and the Sheesh Mahal.

  • Itmad-ud-Daula

    To the north of the fort and across the river Yamuna are several fine examples of Mughal architecture. The Itmad-ud-Daula as a by the Empress Noor Jehan as a memorial to her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg , is beautifully ornamented with pietra dura inlay and lattice work marble screens.

  • Mehtab Bagh

    It is also called “The Moonlight Garden”. It gives you a view of the Taj from the river bank. This 25-acre garden complex is situated directly opposite the monument and was actually built before the Taj, by Emperor Babur (the founder of the Mughals Empire). It fell into ruin but has been beautifully reconstructed. The entry cost is 100 rupees for foreigners, and it’s open until sunset.

  • Sikandra Fort

    Sikandra fort is the tomb of the great mughal ruler Akbar. He was the most popular ruler of the times. Akbar him self planed to keep his tomb at this place. So he started building the fort, but that was finished by his son janhagir. Visit this place is to get a thought of an amaze of the best ruler India has ever got.
